A barrel moving from one place to another is nothing unusual in a cellar. A cellar is a living place. Barrels arrive, leave, and move from one row to the next as the spirits inside them evolve. But some movements are harder to miss.
Alexandre Gabriel began noticing a few of them.
He knew the cellars well enough to recognize that these old Barbados barrels weren't being moved without reason. Still, he chose not to ask.
"I let it happen," he says today.
What he didn't know was that, behind the scenes, his team had been quietly working on a surprise.
Twenty years had passed since Alexandre first began his journey as a blender in Cognac. Two decades spent learning from those who came before him, digging through old books and archives, tasting, comparing, experimenting and, often, starting again.
When he was named Master Blender, the people closest to him wanted to mark the occasion. Not with a formal ceremony, but in the vineyards of the château, gathered around a meal with several hundred guests. The surprise came at the end of the day.
And finally, those mysterious barrels began to make sense.
Inside was a blend of very old Barbadian rums, carefully selected, shaped and kept secret by his team. A rum created to celebrate twenty years of Alexandre's work and the journey that had brought them all to that moment.
That rum would become Planteray XO 20th Anniversary.
What simplicity hides
The first taste brought him back to something his grandfather, who had trained him, used to say: "A great spirit never shows the effort it took. The best ones feel simple, obvious."
That was exactly what struck him.
The rum doesn't try to impress. The aromas simply unfold, without showing off. But behind that effortless first impression are countless decisions: very old Barbados rums, different levels of barrel toast, several types of wood, successive maturations, and years spent searching for the right balance.
The decision was made almost on the spot: this rum wouldn't remain a surprise created for one man. It would become Planteray XO 20th Anniversary.

Barbados first, Cognac next
Choosing Barbados was no accident. Widely regarded as the birthplace of rum, the island has been making the spirit for centuries. Every rum in the XO begins its journey there, at Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery, which has stood on the beachfront, at Brighton Beach, for more than 130 years.
Back then, Maison Ferrand did not yet own the distillery. But the ties were already there: the teams worked hand in hand, trading expertise and a shared love of rum. Nobody knew how far the story would go, or that a few years later Stade's West Indies Rum Distillery would join Maison Ferrand.
Those barrels were picked for one reason and one reason only: quality. Great Barbados rums, the kind that move you and have a story to tell.
Looking back, it feels almost like fate. Those barrels already held the beginnings of what would become one of the house's signature rums.

Its first life unfolds in the tropics. In Barbados' heat, the exchange between rum and wood intensifies. The angels take their share, aromas concentrate, and the barrels leave their mark on the spirit, developing generous notes of vanilla and coconut alongside sweeter, dessert-like notes.
Then came the journey.
The rums travelled across the Atlantic to Cognac, where they continued ageing in former Ferrand Cognac casks. Here, time works differently. The cooler climate slows the interaction between rum and wood, allowing the spirit to evolve more gently and its edges to become finer and more refined.
That double maturation has become the signature of Planteray. But the XO goes further. It pulls together everything Maison Ferrand has learned over the years: the choice of woods, the different toast levels, the successive maturations, the transfers from barrel to barrel, and that hands-on way of guiding a rum instead of simply waiting for it to age.

The finest tribute of all
The story could have ended there.
Instead, over the years, the XO became Planteray's most loved and bestselling bottle.
It has also become the most awarded XO rum, with more than 50 gold medals since its creation. Among the standouts: a Double Gold Medal and a 97-point score at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2025, plus a gold medal at the Rum & Cachaça Masters 2025.
Alexandre Gabriel likes to point out that he never saw it coming. The idea came from his team, from the people who quietly selected those rums, built the blend and waited for the right moment to let him discover it.
"I find it beautiful, ironic and funny all at once. But above all it feels right, because what we do is teamwork, first and foremost," he says.
In the end, maybe that's what this bottle says best: a gift meant to celebrate one man, turned into the signature of the house.
